2.21    GASEOUS EMISSIONS

BOILER

The source of air pollution in sugar industries is mainly due to the generation of flue gases form the boilers. The factory has high - pressure boilers. Bagasse is used as fuel in the boiler. The presence of nitrogen or sulphur in bagasse is almost insignificant, therefore, toxic chemicals such as nitric oxides and sulpher

dioxides in flue gases are negligible and they are within the tolerance limits. The main contamination in flue gases is a particulate matter due to fly ash and carbon particles, which need suitable device for physical separation the height of chimney is 70 m and this is sufficient to disperse the pollution away from the premises and over a wide atmospheric area. The minimum concentration of pollutants likely to be present at any point on the ground level or atmosphere shall be within the allowable limits. The chimney is provided with portholes. Working platform and leader are provided for the chimney for sampling of the flue gases. Electrostatic precipitator shall be provided at the exit of the boiler of free flue gases from suspended particufates. The clean gas  then is discharged to atmosphere by induced draught fan through chimney.
